Windings are made with different alloys. "Pure nickel" is the nickel alloy that was used in the 50's and 60's, before the price of nickel went up. Today's common "nickel wound" strings use nickel plated steel for the windings. Both have the same steel core wire, which is also used for the plain strings.

"Pure nickel" has a softer, mellower tone than standard nickel wound strings. I'm not aware of any pedal steel string sets made of pure nickel. I designed two 8-string sets for console steel, using SIT's pure nickel wounds. They're one of my most popular products.

I use GHS Boomers or Progressives on my pedal steels, depending on my mood when it's time to change them. The Boomers are standard nickel wound, and the Progressives are a slightly brighter alloy.
