A few month ago I bought a D12 Sho-Bud Pro 2 Custom, and have been trying to get some info on how many were made and are there many guys/Gals that play and own one of these, because before I bought this steel I did not even know Sho-Bud made a D12.
It is a superb steel that up to a few years ago had been stored for over 30 years and is in absolutely beautiful condition.

Thanks for any info on the beast..

Jimmy..

Jim....probably not very many. Even my S-12 Sho-Bud was only the second I saw at the Sho-Bud shop in Denmark street. The first one I tried was actually in The shop in the Croydon area before the late John Edmed moved to the premises in "Tin Pan Alley"

Thanks Micky and it seems by the lack of replies to my topic that these steels are indeed vary rare and there is not much known about these D12 Buds, but all I can say if the few that were made are anything like the one I have then I am very happy and very lucky to have found one.

Jimmy...the first one I tried was a blonde like your double neck...the one I bought a few years later in 1977 was "Blue" but over the years the sun etc turned it to "Green" .... I guess you saw the colour after the rebuild after the house fire?? it's a good "Turquoise" now, and still plays great...but when I do a gig, jam session etc...I take the Carter Uni in split cases. I just can't carry "Heavy" anymore.

There's mine, now an SD-12 (the extra parts are in James Morehead's hands, so they've not gone to waste).
Walnut in color, 1974.

Lane please don`t take this the wrong way because it is up to you what you do with your guitars, and I know you probably had a good reason for taking the back neck off your D12 but IMHO it`s a sad loss of a great original steel, and I would never consider ever doing that to the beautiful D12 I have.

They're not as rare as you might think, they made more than a few. Wink Do a google image search on "D12 Sho Bud", and you'll see some good examples. Winking

I didn't add a single hole. I used the existing holes to mount the pad. All it needs is neck, keyhead and changer.
And, considering that I wanted an SD-12 with 10 and 7, the ONLY possible guitars would be Bud, either two-hole or rack-and-barrel.
And with that many pulls on one neck, there's not much left for the second neck.
AND, the original Bud parts stayed in the hands of James Morehead.

Thanks Donny, as I said I did not have a clue about the D12 Bud but because I never knew they were made and that is in all the 40+ years I have been playing and a lot of different brands , so I would say that to me my D12 is a rare beast, and as far as I know may be the only one in the UK.

Thanks Lane, and yes I can imagine it has made a superb 12 string Universal, also made it a bit lighter, and would love to see a picture.

I got sidelined for a couple months with a torn bicep, and then the wedding.
So far the biggest deal was the fretboard, which I shared pictures of. Instead of a slab of plastic or aluminum, frets and suits are in variegated gold leaf.

The original single volume Sho-Bud instruction manual has a picture of Jeff Newman on the Opry stage with a D-12 Sho-Bud on the front cover. This was published around 1969 (the manual was written, as I was told, by Dewitt Scott and the instructional pictures are of Scotty and George Lewis).

From what I understand, Ed Naylor ended up with Jeff's D-12 and I have the Hooper Case for that guitar. I Got it when I got my first Pro 3 and he didn't have a case for it. I had to put a towel in the case to keep it from shifting around when carrying the guitar. I have worn out the case, but I still have it, hoping to have it refurbished some day. P. S. I still have that guitar in my home office/man cave and I play it every day.I LOVE my Buds!!!
