great sound from that steel (& playing) - very crisp and lively - probably the best great balance - no mud, boom or ice pick.
what was your recording chain on that Bill? DI? _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

yes jerome. good ears. just an old alembic tube preamp straight in. get more of the sound of the guitar than the amp. |

I love it that you stopped at 9 strings. Is that so you can have wider spacing and use a 10 string pickup?

Ditto what Mike said. Anybody who can quote Neil Diamond and Debussy in one lick is A-OK! _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com

i think 9 strings is the perfect E13 set up, imo 8 is not enough and 10 is too many.
one more question on that clip Bill - it sounds like you play without picks, is that right? _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

might try that E13 and see what its like.
no pick on the thumb, first and pinky. alaska picks on the middle and ring. they have a softer sound and leave the pad of your fingertip unrestricted for muting/blocking. sometimes i will use the thumb pick if i get a blister or a bruise or a split cuticle on my thumb from playing too much. i use those herco things that look like a guitar pick. take a heavy gauge and thin it down some on the belt sander and then grind it down so it is smaller and more round.
i would prefer no picks and just the nail, but when you get older, the nails tend to get more brittle and couple that with working wood and fixing cars, fishing and such...they are always chipping and breaking, so the alaska pics really help out a lot. |

i was listening to that clip thinking, man he must have some good nails!
i recalled Segovia when asked by an interviewer the "secret" to playing classical guitar, and responding with his thick accent, "A gooda nails"
very nice sound you get.
i never could play classical because i had the worst possible nail DNA - they were thin, brittle and hooked at the tips when i tried to grow them out. no amount of filing/shaping would fix them...plus having long fingernails drove me crazy _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |
