I just broke another Kluson tuner on my Emmons p/p low A string on the C6 neck (.068 - .070). Now I'm considering replacing all the tuners with a better gear ratio and maybe with locking tuners. Anyone have relevant experience or advice?

I'll share what I was told by a devout Emmons push pull player.

"Never change the tuners on an Emmons PP with anything except what came on it."

The guy told me it will change/ruin the tone.

I have no experience with it but that's what I was told..

I believe Steve Fishel, has Klusons on his Zum, even though it's an all-pull guitar. And I think if anyone has a discerning ear, it would be Steve.....Superb Tone from him too.

Our friend Billy Knowles will have or know where to get genuine
Kluson replacement tuners, as he replaced the keys on my ZB custom
with new Klusons
when he restored it to original.

I use Gotoh keys and prefer them to the new Klusons. Be aware that the button post are just slightly taller than the original Klusons and the mounting holes are metric and need to be opened up a bit.

One of my Zums has kluson style tuners on it.

However they are Grover brand tuners..

Peter, if you want to replace the one tuner I have a few original Klusons off of push pull guitars.

my old zum has klusons also and sounds great. bruce z. thought they enhanced the tone also. he probably found it easier to use more modern tuners later because some of the klusons were pretty sloppy and had to be replaced. i wouldn't put anything different on mine though.

now on the other hand, i have an old emmons p/p that a certain person changed out to older mini-grovers...and it sounds fabulous.

These guys are making the new Klusons

http://www.kluson.com/tuning_machines.html

But you have to buy 6 at a time.

This is an interesting read to get the "back story" on Kluson branding.

Those Kluson tulip head keys seem a bit pricy to me. I replaced the tuners on my Emmons S10 p/p with Gotoh vintage tuners and other than using an awl to slightly enlargen the screw holes in the tuners, they were easy to mount and use the original screws with no modifying the keyhead at all. Just be careful not to crossthread the mounting screws when screwing them into the keyhead. Plus, they were a bit cheaper than the Klusons and I only had one neck to change out. Best wishes, Walter

What kind of locking tuners? The Sperzels I use on my 6-strings would be tough to use, I would think. Might have a hard time operating the "tension" wheels? Not enough room?

Thanks for all the suggestions and information. I'm temporarily replacing the one tuner with a used Kluson and will replace them all, probably with Gotohs, when I overhaul my D-10 this fall.
