Hi everyone - i have a question as to which type of guitar to step up to…
Ive been on my Carter Starter for about 1 1/2 years and will probably be looking to step up to a higher end model in the next 6 months.
I paid 800 for my carter and figure I will probably spend twice that (sell my carter and throw in an additional 600-800)
I want to stay on 10 string E9.
There are many brands and really i have no idea.
I want more smooth feel and precision than my carter offers and I suppose a little nicer sound with higher quality tuners and overall build. I am least concerned with appearance - as long as its a reasonable color.
I think i want to steer clear of the Sho Buds and older MSAs etc - would like to stick to something newer - brand new is unnecessary but i figure i would like to take advantage of some newer mechanical technology used that the old 70s brands didn't have…
So which brand should i look for - any pointers of what to look for or look out for???
thanks |

Carter pro models are usually a good value...
Do NOT be afraid of an MSA.. It will last forever, and will do anything anyone could ever want on a pedal steel, and they tend to run cheap... In all honesty, your Starter and $600 won't buy what you want.. Probably more like sell the Starter and add $1000, 900 if you are lucky... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

There are many pull-release guitars out there. Be careful and buy a All Pull.
The Carter pro guitars are good guitars and a good value also. _________________ Bill |

Scott, you might have much more luck if you move your thread to the Pedal Steel section.
I will say that I've had the same MSA U12 that I bought new in 1979 - now 35 years old. But you will likely get many more posts about MSA, Sho-Bud, push-pull, etc. under http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewforum.php?f=5 _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

IMO all of the newer brands are fine quality instruments. Carter, GFI generally run in a rather reasonable price range for a S10 or SD10. Don't be afraid of Sho~Bud or MSA. They can be great guitars. Right now there is a GFI Expo SD10 in the for sale section for a great price _________________ www.facebook.com/countrydaveharmonson |

I went to an older D10 MSA after a carter starter- great guitar, superior in every way but too heavy for me. A GFI was just right for some years. Now I play an emmons D10, and I wish I'd skipped the guitars in between. This is of course my opinion- many seem to be happy with their MSAs. |
