"The Lord Knows I'm Drinking," written by Bill Anderson and recorded by Cal Smith. Produced by Walter Haynes, with the wonderful pedal steel guitar of John Hughey.

Honorable mention to "The Rodeo Song," written by the great Gaye Delorme, and recorded by Garry Lee and the Showdown. Back in my days of regular gigging, there were places where you would never be asked to return if you played that song. There was also one biker bar in particular, that would not let you quit without playing it.

Johnny Paycheck - "I Can't Quit Drinking"
Gary Stewart - "Whiskey Trip"

For some reason, I really like listening to drinking songs when I go running. Maybe it has something to do with the concept of suffering.

Many people have cited "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking". Justin Trevino told the story about how Bill Anderson got the idea to write the song. Bill and his wife were in a restaurant having drinks before dinner and Bill sees the minister in the restaurant…he tells his wife to hide the drinks and she tells him she won't because the Lord knows I"m drinking.

As Tony alluded to above, "I Threw Away The Rose" by the Hag is about as good as any "drinking song" could possibly get. One of my favorite pedal steel parts of all time.
