Has anyone tried one of these amps for steel? I have just acquired one and for a 9 watt amp it is amazing. I plugged mine in to my Carter starter (modified + E66 pickup)via Ernie Ball JR pedal and Chord analogue delay pedal and got what I consider the best sound I've ever had, certainly the cleanest sound. An amazing little amp in my opinion. I believe they call it the Pawn shop series. I would have loved to have tried the Excelsior which has a 15" speaker and is 12 watt but it seems they are no longer made. Having said that I am more than happy with what I've got.

At 9 watts single ended, I am amazed it has any clean at all. |

I know what you mean about the clean, but I can attest that this series has a good amount of clean for practice and recording. I have the Excelsior and it is kind of a cheesy looking amp, and does not have a great deal of flexibility, but you can turn it up to about halfway and it gets loud...and will stay clean. you go over that hump and it gets pretty dirty. Surprisingly, not a lot of deep lows through the 15" without adding a little EQ. My Champ gets much better lows on an 8" speaker. I bet that Rampart has some good sounding lows. |
