Anyone have a "Maui Maid"?
The disintegrating label glued inside, to the instrument's back plate, and visible through its soundhole, reads:
HAWAIIAN
"MAUI MAID"
STEEL GUITARS
AND UKULELES
CHRISTO(P?)HES, SAN FRANCISCO
U S DISTRIBUTORS
Looks just like a Weissenborn, and was represented as
such by the dealer I purchased it from in the 1980s. |

We'd need photos to be able to identify what you're talking about. I haven't heard of "Maui Maid" brand instruments before this. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Here's a couple of pics, as requested. I tried to load more, including a closeup of the aforementioned label, but for whatever reason was unsuccessful. I'll try again later. |

Here are some more photos:
Note that on the closeup shot of the bridge, the saddle appears to be a chunk of fretwire. Is that the normal practice on these instruments? Would there be a better material, or would it be best to leave it as is?
What is the favored material for the nut, and how tall should it be? |

Madonna, Maui, and Maui Maid were private labels used by Christophe's Dept. Store in San Francisco to sell guitars built by Hermann Weissenborn. No question the guitar shown was made Weissenborn. |
