Buddy, if you are out there, would you send a note telling my wife Darla, that I really do need a new pedal steel?

The way I see it, if Buddy Emmons says it, how could she refuse?

I'm getting desperate here! I really do need a new pedal steel. Blue of course, and we do still have one credit card that isn't maxed out.

I keep seeing all of those other guys posting pictures of their new pedal steels and it just isn't fair.

Step 1: Pay off all credit cards.
Step 2: Save up the money you need.
Step 3: Buy a sweet pedal steel.
Step 4: Live a life unencumbered by needless debt.

Bill, how about a compromise and go with an excellent second-hand steel? There sure are a bunch of them on this forum. Later when you have more dough, you can sell the used steel and buy a new. Good luck steve t

Let me explain.
I am always kidding and telling my wife I need a new pedal steel, a blue one, and she always says, why, you have two already? You can only play one at a time anyway. So I said everybody will tell you I need another pedal steel, and she says who is everybody.

I really could buy another one, (steel) if I wanted it. It's just a running joke between my wife and I.

I am not destitute yet, not rich either, just not destitute, and I have not maxed out any credit cards.

However, most women do not understand about guitars, guns, or motorcycles. A man can always use another one.

My wife plays guitar...she owns one, a nice little Takamine that she paid $500 for at a local music store. She loves it but has no desire for another one which leads to her not understanding my need to have a bedroom filled with pedal steels and lap steels with a few banjos, guitars, etc. thrown in.

Jim, I know what you mean. I really don't know how many six string guitars I have. But I could use another one.

My wife threatens to have the kitchen remodeled if I buy another pedal steel though. I could always sneak it into my music room, and as long as I kept one in the case she would never know. Plus she rarely comes out to my music room.

Yes Bill, I have a pretty good sized office at work and I believe I currently have two or three guitars and a mandolin stashed here, as well as a house full. I have two pedal steels in the bedroom at the moment, and another coming via ups today. Hopefully two of these are just visiting. Very Happy

Yes, my wife recently said "why do you need another instrument? You can't play them all at once." I said "you can't wear all your shoes at once." That didn't go over well, but I bought that hollowbody anyway. Why not? I was already in the dog house.

Have a thermometer handy when you do this and watch the temperature drop in the room.

Me too Bill,me too! Maybe we can help each other out here.I am seriously wanting to upgrade to a U12.

[b]Mike Wheeler wrote in another thread:
[b] [/i]Quite a while back I decided the interest rates sucked for savings and time deposits, so I chose to invest in some steels. I now have 5....bought for low prices. They are part of my retirement savings strategy.

Great thing about this strategy, if the market crashes, or the currency becomes worthless(as most currencies throughout history have)Mike will still have steel's to sell trade or even make a little money playing the blues. On the down side, theft ,fire, or flood could ruin this strategy.Of course the wife does not need to know that.
This is how I plan to present this to the wife who made up the rule"no more guitars without selling one" Mad
To Wife:
1. "Honey we need to take a withdrawal from the (minimal) retirement savings (MINE) while I finish the holistic cancer treatment regimen. It did rather well last year. The key to protecting our investment gains is to take a profit and diversify in to other assets as any good investment adviser would tell you."
Idea Idea Idea
We have talked about starting a music ministry in the small church we are in the process of becoming members of.The possibilities are wide open here.
2."Honey you should see some of these U-tube videos of the folks playing gospel music on the steel in church. Isn't that pretty.See this cat is playing on a U-12 neck doesn't that sound nice? Razz
Well my E9th neck is no good for that,it is only good for that country twang and blues that I love and you hate. Crying or Very sad "
"Here we are joining a church with no music leader,it's almost as if the Good Lord has come down and anointed us to make his music and sing his songs of praise with great joy!"
Very Happy Very Happy
"There is no higher purpose in life than praising and making music for the Lord!!Hallelujah!!"
"You know the market is especially soft for steel guitars right now. They are a good investment.Especially if the markets crash, and the currency goes into turmoil in 2016 as your psychic friends are predicting. (as they have been predicting about every significant date on the lunar calender for eons) Evil Twisted Devil
What do ya's think. Should I try it?

Do you think Mike would give me permission to plagiarize and use his very well laid out plan.

I mean, we too starting with a new church and what he says about the honky tonk sound is correct. That would never do in church. We are Baptists and I have had my old steels in, only the Lord knows where. New church, new steel to play there. One never knows, I might need to leave one at church. Maybe an amp too.

How do y'all make that little box around someone else's quote when posting? Mike Wheeler gets credited with the second paragraph above. Yes you can
plagiarize the rest Bill. Winking

OK, guys, I hereby give you all a blanket permission to use my retirement strategy however you see fit. How's that? Very Happy

But I wasn't kidding about it. My steels really are part of my retirement. Plus, I get the joy of playing them any time I choose. Can't say that about an IRA. Very Happy

Don, you're right about the downsides...theft, fire, etc. But then, every investment has inherent risks....and I'm more than a little worried about the strength of the US dollar right now. So, I'll stick with my plan. And my little lady agrees with it!! Now, how cool is THAT!!!! Cool Cool Cool

Do like we do in ham radio... buy it, leave it in the trunk or the car until it gets dust on it, bring it in when she's not there, put it in the closet. Look in the closet when she is there and exclaim "Well, look here, here's one I forgot I had!"....

You have a wonderful Lady Mike Wheeler! I wrote that a little tongue in cheek with humor, but I really am serious too.
I have seriously considered Scott Duckworth's strategy, but think it would cause more problems when I got caught.
And like Larry Bressington, wish I could make more time to master the instruments I have.I will update on how this goes in soon.

I must admit, I have N E V E R tried my plan, however I know another ham it has worked with, although I still believe his wife knows something is up, since he has THREE HF rigs on his desk...

On the retirement idea...there is a guy on youtube, I forget his name, but he has a large storage room filled with vintage and collectible electric guitars for that very purpose. Mostly high end stuff too.
