Pre-war L-00 type Gibson Hawaiian. These guitars were made between 1937 and 1942; the FON number on the neck block of this instrument has faded but the last letter appears to be a C, (which would make it a 1937), followed by a sequence number of 6 written in red pencil. You can view the photo of the neck block in Flickr.
The nut on this guitar is 1-7/8". The spruce top of the instrument is in very nice condition. There is one 2½ inch hairline crack to the left of the fingerboard extension and very several small scratches close together at the very edge of the top next to the binding on the bass string side. The finish is all original and the sunburst on this guitar is absolutely beautiful. As might be expected, there are a few light scuffs and blemishes and some light wear around the sound hole.
The neck is straight and the logo on the peghead is in very nice shape; there is some wear on the rear of the peghead at the top. There is also what looks like a small screw hole on the rear of the peghead that may have held a hook with which to hang the guitar on the wall. It doesn’t bother me but it is an easy fix. The tuners are old and look original. The inside of this guitar is extremely clean and the bridgeplate and bridge are original.
The sound of this guitar is terrific—big, sweet and well-balanced. I replaced the nut when I acquired it but the original is in good shape and is in the case, which is a modern hardshell tweed that is made for L-00 style guitars.
I joined the forum and am posting here because I have had offers from folks who want to buy it and convert it to Spanish style. This is a wonderful vintage instrument for a Hawaiian guitar player and I would prefer that it go to a slide player.
