Probably going to open a big can of worms here, but...I've tried several brands of strings on my lap steel, Ernie Ball Singles from the local music store, SIT semi flats, Morrell, etc. I've probably had the best luck with the Ernie Ball Singles. It seems the sets I've tried had a rough feel to them or were noisy. Particularly DIDN'T like the SIT semis, and wasn't all that impressed with the Morrells either. I really like a smooth feel of the bar on the strings, I don't like to feel rough spots. Anybody tried the LIVE strings on a lap? I use Stainless bars so I would want to stay with nickels. I play C6 six string, by the way. Would I be better off with stainless strings and a different bar?

For 6-string lap steel, I also favor a stainless steel bar, the 3/4" x 3" 5.6-ounce Latch Lake bar:

I prefer the feel of nickel strings. The stainless bar on stainless strings seems to grab too much; way more friction and not nearly as smooth. Stainless steel strings do seem to work okay with chrome-plated bars, but they are too bright-sounding to my old ears.

I don't favor one brand of string over another, and just buy what's cheapest. Lately I've been buying single gauges from Just Strings:

http://www.juststrings.com/guitarsinglestrings.html

If you splurge and by the strings in bulk, you can get a dozen sets of standard .014-.036 C6 gauges for about $3.05 a set, shipped straight to your mailbox within a couple days of ordering. Unless you live within walking distance of a good music store, you'll likely spend more for gas than what they charge for delivery.

I'm beginning to wonder if what I am assuming are nickel strings might actually be stainless steel? The wound strings specifically say nickel, but I'm not sure about the plains.

DaDarrio Chromes (flatwound) are the absolute smoothest strings you will ever find!
Virtualy noisless when sliding the bar on them.
I love the tone and I use them on all my lap steel guitars... (never tried them on a pedal steel)

They are not cheap, and I have to buy extra sets or buy individual strings for my 12 string guitars.

No kidding once I tried them, I just couldn't go back to any other brand.

Tribotone bars have significantly reduced friction and bar noise regardless of string brand. Unfortunately, per Eric's website, they are not currently available.

do they have a c6 set? If not where can you buy singles?

For 8-string playing in A6 tuning, these are my favorites:

I usually just buy several sets from www.musiciansfriend.com I get extra light, light and medium gauge. That gives me an assortment of sizes for C6, A6th etc.

Then I end up with extra fat strings, but I use the chromes on my Jazz guitars as well. So I don't mind having a stockpile with 6 different instrument that can use them.
