There's a few of us youngens around. I'm 29 been playing pedal steel since I was 18.
I also am an advocate for real country music.

That's great Patrick, keep up the good work, we do need younger people interested in steel guitar.

I played last Friday at a UU church with a world-music group here in Providence: the Gnomes. We did 2 sets and I couldn't get away during the break because I was explaining the instrument to curious onlookers.

You know: "What is that instrument? What do you call that?"

I figure a little PR for our machine beats a break any day. These were "mature" folks, not youngsters. Still, they were captivated.

I'm surprised when I hear concern about youth and the pedal steel. At shows it tends to attract a fair amount conversation, with both types of music fans, musicians and drunks.

Also the Gnomes sound fun, and they cover pomp and pride? Wow! Thats pretty great. Man, I gotta pick the fiddle up more, so much great music out there,

I think the pedal steel should be in all types of music.
I just wish I could play better to help it along.

Jason, I was subbing (one rehearsal and some 5 x 8 cards!) for the Gnomes. But I played steel behind squeeze box and Irish whistle, as well as some reggae . . . and supporting our marvelous fiddle player . . who also played the "erhu."

Had a great time, again, taking steel into relatively uncharted territory and bringing it to the non-country public.

Are you anywhere near the Lakes Region, Jason?

Jason, I am in Providence but every now and then I play at Sally O'Brien's in Somerville, on a Sunday evening 5-7.30 with Peter Ward and Amarillo.

Don't have a firm booking for the next time, though.

It would be great if you could hear this nice little 5-piece at Sally's . . .
