Which grip would be best to play a 2 string chord on the first and second strings? I have been experimenting with thumb & middle, thumb and index and strumming with index and middle. In my way of thinking I have been varying the grip that would be for natural according to a song; say if a chord is on the first two strings followed by the second and third, I would use both index & middle strum the outer strings and then use the thumb & index for the next chord. In other words I have been switching between the three. Is this okay? Thanks

It IS okay. The only rule is, that it feels comfortable to you. I frequently use thumb and middle for two string chords. You'll get to a point when you don't have to think about...it will just happen. Smile It probably already is happening. To test the theory...play one of your tunes without the index pick, and take note of any awkward or missing notes. Repeat the excercise without the middle finger pick. You will probably surprise yourself.

I have learned most of my playing skills from two great players... Herb Remington and Jerry Byrd. Jerry says to always use the thumb and finger for two string grips. It doesn't matter which finger, but he says, " Never use just the two fingers".
Herb has never specifically talked about the two finger grip, but I have seen him, many times, using the two fingers on strings 1 and 2 or 2 and 3.
I think Rick gave you the correct answer.. just use whatever is comfortable.

I'm surprised to hear that Jerry said to always use the thumb and a finger to play all two string harmonies. Even on strings 1 and 2? It makes good sense when playing the middle strings, but IMO it's very economical, and faster, to use just two fingers when picking strings 1 and 2. I do that all the time. I need to watch some JB videos to see if he ever uses two fingers to play two strings.

i nearly always use thumb & finger on 1-2 unless i'm playing a chord grip - tip i learned from watching JB. it sounds better and you can get more authoritative tone that way. i don't think its gonna hurt anything to play with the 2 fingers if thats more comfortable - just a personal habit.
Doug, i bet you carried that over from pedal steel - i will use the 2 fingers on pedal steel... you are bouncing around the triad so much on pedals thats more efficient.

I seem to play a lot with two fingers on the non pedal but thumb finger more on the pedal. Seems to put my hand in a better shape for blocking that way on the pedal.
