Hi, I would like to find out if Fender 400's were sold in any color besides Red and Sunburt? I'm looking at one and its Brown, is this the original color or was it refinished? |

Brown is most likely a refinish. Often, the best way to tell is if the pedalboard matches the guitar body, and still has the big "Fender" decal in place. |

Nicholas, Your answer is yes. They came in a blond or cream color. I had one. Bought it new.

I've seen those, but I never seen a brown one until I saw this one, so I was checking to see if its refinished or did Fender make some in BROWN. |

Well, they made them in blonde, which sometimes darkens to the point where it looks like a dark beige. This thread shows a picture of Sneaky Pete's blonde 400, which isn't a particularly dark one - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=205284
I've seen some darken quite a bit more than this. But I've never seen a 'true brown' one. |

The earliest model 400 (with the large rectangular pickup) came in blond, and later in a sunburst. The later model (with the skinny Jaguar style pickup) came in sunburst, or a custom paint color. Fender's custom paint colors at the time included #501 Blond, #505 Olympic White, #502 Lake Placid Blue, #506 Black, and #509 Candy Apple Red. Only a few examples of the custom-color pedal steels are known, but I have seen pictures of at least one of each of the factory colors listed above. Many were repainted by owners because of the easily-chipped factory finishes, so very few of the rare colors you're likely to see are "original".
Due to the total lack of collector interest in Fender pedal steels, the color really doesn't mean much in terms of value. Whereas a certain custom color can triple or quadruple the value of an old Tele or Strat, it would likely add very little to the value of a Fender pedal steel. |
