Hi all from Australia.
My sister Emma Franz has dedicated much of the last five years of her life to making a film on Bill Frisell. I'm sure I don't need to say that he is one of the most influential guitarists of our time. She has followed and filmed Bill around the world and captured interviews with people ranging from Greg Leisz, Lucinda Williams, Paul Simon, Paul Motian, John Abercrombie, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Joe Lovano, Jack DeJohnette, Joey Baron, and more! I was lucky enough to be involved in some filming of a rehearsals and a concert Bill did with the BBC Symphony in London in 2009.
I've been lucky enough to have seen much of the 150 hours of footage she has shot, and there is some beautiful stuff there, including hours and hours she has spent filming Bill one on one where he talks about his music and philosophies.
She has done all of this off her own back financially. I'm sure you can appreciate the cost of making a documentary is enormous, and she has launched a campaign to raise some funds on Indiegogo to get the film to the fine cut stage.
If you are a fan of Bill's, or of Greg Leisz, (who is interviewed and appears in concert in the film,) or just of great music in general, please check out the links below. No problem if you don't want to contribute, but if you like what you see, and you know people who are into Bill Frisell's music, please share and help get the word out!
Warmest thanks,
Ben Franz

Frisell is my favorite guitarist. I've seen him several times, but once I got to see him at the Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, just Frisell and Leisz. Sat in the first row - I could have leaned forward and untied Frisell's shoelace. Excellent show. It was also the first time I was that close to someone as good as Leisz playing a pedal steel. I was blown away.
That little acoustic guitar Frisell is holding right around the 1:20 mark looks like the one I saw at the Old Towne School of Folk Music (Chicago). The venue has a guitar store across the hall from the auditorium, and a whole bunch of us guitar geeks were looking at that guitar. A little while later Frisell was onstage with it saying he saw it in the store and bought it. The guitar in the film may just be another small body acoustic, but it sure does look like the one I saw.
Good luck to Emma on getting this documentary completed. I hope I get to see it. |
