Does the forum put out a top 10 list of steelers every year? If so, where would I find it?

Not that I have ever seen. It would be very difficult to do. Who decides? Everyone has their favorites, some for sentimental reasons, because they know them, and not necessarily the best or most heard.

Richard, that is what I thought when the subject came up last night, so I thought I would ask just in case. Thanks.

I think we should put Buddy at the top, and then we could argue about the others.

I like Hughey better than Emmons, although it is close. There are probably 20 that I could put in the "top 10". I would also put Garrish in with Hughey and Emmons. I guess those 3 could all be tied for first place on my list.

I like Doug's list. But I would want to commend both Mike Auldridge and David Hartley. Beautifully lyrical playing from both of them. I don't know if they should supplant any on the list, but all would do well to listen to them and pay attention to what they DON'T play.

You know, there us a long list of players who have mastered the instrument to the point where everything they do ir did is going to be great. These inlude Buddy, Lloyd, Jeff Newman, Paul Franklin, Jay Dee Maness, Curly Chalker, Hal Rugg, Reece, Joe Wright, Dvid Wright, Sarah Jory, Jim Cohen, Herb Steiner... it's a long list and getting longer every day.

It's foolish to try to rank these players. On a 1 to 10 scale, they all rate an 11.

I think Dickie Overbey deserves a mention. I think he's like a Sonny Osborne of the steel: playing familiar-ish stuff but with a twist that makes your ears do a doubletake.
