I’ve built and sold my last Hardway Melobro; and still have to see if there is someone out there with the skill set and desire to take over the Melobro (fiberglass dobro) project.
I’m not sure where else to list this, but just in case a player might know someone who wants to build and sell them, I thought I’d get the word out.
It includes parts, molds and jigs like this (not all shown).
I’m thinking in the $2,500 to $5k range depending on how much time is asked of me in training or set up.
I had a person in Ventura state they would buy it last month, then strung me along for weeks and copped out wasting my time - I don’t want any more tire kickers, dreamers or flakes but actual qualified buyers; so there will be a $100 non- refundable deposit to enter into negotiations for Melobro to make sure they are serious.
It’s an amazing instrument which I believe could have an amazing future with the right builder. Hopefully we’ll find a builder who can make guitar history with it. _________________ old Melobar guy |

Hi Ted,
Do You Have A Recording Of A "MELOBRO" To Post?
I Heard One Being Played Some Years Ago On The Internet & To My Ear They Have A Unique Tone.
BTW: Did You Ever Build An 8 String Version?

Not a good post that I know of Roger, I know Paul Franklin used it on some albums and online there are albums with it listed in the credits. The original G series was just fiberglass which is probably what you heard, with a lot of volume and bite, then the subsequent models all could have their tone adjusted with wood baffles that are suspended in the body on a neck through design carrying the vibration from the heal block to the tail block - which is why the tone is so distinct and the sustain so good. The only complaint I ever had was putting too many wood baffles in a guitar that went to Walnut Creek CA. area and the guy said, "I have a wood dobro, I want that fiberglass bite sound" so we took two baffles out and he loved it. So you can manipulate the tone with these guitars more than anything ever built using the internal sound plates varying from maple to what I like, Indian Rosewood. I even had the idea of making a sound board that could slip in a slot in the back so a player could modify it and change sound boards to what specifically wanted. You can see the internal sound board ideas on the blog site.
Yes I did build three of the 7/8 models; these had the ability to flip the saddles and nut over so you could change from a 7 string to an 8 if you wanted too. _________________ old Melobar guy |

The Melobro Hardway Project is sold. The new owner is in Canada and will do a release later this year.
Looking forward to seeing what new blood can do with the potential of that instrument. _________________ old Melobar guy |

I love my MeloBro! Fixing to send it to Paul Beard to have the Fishman Aura installed and one of his Legend Cones, then top it off with one of his crazy cutom cover plates |

Hey, Ted, congratulations on the sale. I'll be very glad to see these being built again, a unique and valuable instrument that emerged from a long line of innovation and thoughtful development. _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com
