OK,

I have thoroughly exhausted the search and still not satisfied with what I found. Can anyone who has actually stripped a ShoBud of the early '70s era confirm if the color was applied over the sanding sealer, or if the wood was stained. I have a 2 tone that could use some loving, and it appears as though the color is not stained into the wood. If it is not, I will refinish it blonde as it has some really nice grain to it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have some places on mine where the lacquer is chipped off and it appears that the bare wood is still the blonde color so I'd say it is stained. Mine is a 1974. Also in an article about the history of shobud guitars it talks about the local company's where they purchased the colored stains. Hope this helps.

The wood was stained with food color and then lacquered with nitrocellulose Lacquer.
The Water Decals are under Lacquer.
It's easy to strip and bleach out the stain; but the stain can sometimes get in the figuring/birdseye and will only highlight the cool inflections of a good maple wood when going natural or blonde.

Interesting.

Thanks Ricky, I was 99% sure that was the case. I have a few chips out of the finish on the color, and it appeared as though the wood was bare. I guess they are more than just finish chips..
