I can't think what to look for..... MSA Classic, pulling a wholetone lower, but note drops, then starts to rise back up.

I had this problem on my BMI. Not sure if it's relevant to your changer, but might point you in the right direction?

Rich,
If your guitar has helper springs it could be that - that is problem with helper springs. If it is adjustable than relax some of its tension. Dave

Move the pull rod to the hole in the changer farthest away from the changer axle. It is usually caused by the tension in the return spring being greater than necessary but it is not adjustable. There have been occasions that I've stretched the spring but that usually is not necessary.

Return spring appears to be the problem. Not adjustable. As soon as hardware store opens, I'll see if I can find a light one that fits.

But another lower on the same string works properly.....

I'm setting up Dan Burnham's JET 10 tuning, which has the usual half step raise and lower of the 4th string. But also lowers it a whole step.

Ah- since there are only two lowers on the earlier Classics that presents a bit of a problem. If the other lower is only a half step consider putting it on the closest hole to the axle. You can also check out if it will do it at all by simply pushing the lower scissor with a Phillips screwdriver at the desired hole and see what happens. You might also consider varying the string gauge a titch.

By moving the raise to the hole further from the changer, I resolved the issue. Thanks to Richard Burton's explanation in a different thread.

I will be sending a donation to the Forum in appreciation of the wealth of information it provides.

The lower was pivoting on the nylon nut of the raise. Moving the raise away from the axle lessened the mechanical advantage of the lower. At least I think that's what's happening.

I will have to be careful to not "overtune the whole step lower, because then it starts to pull the raise.

Loading an old MSA up with twenty pulls is a good definition of masochism.

The problem returned when the guitar was on its feet instead of its back. So I replaced the .013 E string with a .014; problem solved. Hope it stays solved. Also replaced .020W E with a plain and resolved that issue. Apparently an all-pull guitar is very fussy about string tension.
