My friend Bill made me this incredible amp. It is basically a high power tweed twin, with two power tubes, shoe horned into a tweed pro cab. He switched around a few things using a standard cab and chassis. It sounds wonderful with GE 6550's, I'm going to try 7581's with a GZ34 one of these days.
Just wanted to share
Bill does good work, uses the good stuff(all Mercury Magnetics). The amp is DEAD quiet, louder and cleaner than hell.

That's a gorgeous amp, with workmanship to match.
If it sounds THAT good, why would you want to try different tubes? That reminds me of "someone" running for office and saying:
"This is a wonderful country. . . together, we can change it."
What am I missing?

Sometimes I find 6550's to be a tad brash, and a tube rectifier can help to soften it up a bit.
Just tweaks really, it sounds great as is, I just like to experiment.
I am going to put a D-130 in there. The Telonics is great if you need to hit it with a lot of power but the JBL is way more detailed, efficient, complex etc etc. The extra weight is a drag but this thing already weights a ton with it's massive trannys. The knob next to the standby switch is a presence control, which is great to have with a JBL. |

I agree, the JBL set the standard years ago for detail. In fact, I think that word offers a great description of the sound of a JBL. As you said, they are heavy, and so are the transformers, but you get what you pay for.
Would like to hear it. Play something pretty and put it on YouTube.

Very nice build, those Solen fast caps in the filter section should never need replacing nice touch but they are so big guys usually don't use them.

I noticed those caps too. You'd really have to work hard to get that amplifier to hum.

| I played Carty's and liked it so much I got Bill to build me a similar amp. These things sound fantastic. I'll try and take some pictures and post in the next day or two. The only problem with it is how uptight it makes me dragging it around to gigs, not wanting to mess it up! |

The amp wasn't finished when these photos were taken. There's a temporary pot in there for voicing and I think you went with a GZ-34 instead of the diodes. |

I've got a matched set of 7581A's in my old original '65 Twin.
They don't draw any extra filament current.
You gotta check 'em out sometime! |

When I see these pics of a tube amp chassis, I am amazed at just how few parts are actually in them.
