I put a feel stop on my 2nd string lower today, a job I've been putting off until it really mattered. Up till now I'd only been using it to get a dominant seventh, but I needed an accurate fifth below the raised 3rd to play the tab below (intro to Devil's Alley) which I'd got from this

It's double-tracked (don't know why) but I think what I have is close enough. Who was the steel player - Don Warden?

If that tab is accurate, I doubt it is Don. I may be wrong, but I think he only had the A & B pedals and no knee levers.

Richard, I think you may have just explained why it's double-tracked.

Definitely not Don. Sounds more like Weldon to me, as he did a few cuts with Porter at one time.

Why wouldn't you just play that 10LL note on the 5th string?

Donny - are you absolutely sure of that? You know that you have been accredited as having cardboard ears!! Not many of us can boast that one!! Laughing Laughing

b0b, I'm sure there are lots of ways - you could do the second phrase on 4 & 6 without breaking the slur, but the sound would change. But crucially, I've ended up fitting the stop, a job I still wouldn't have done otherwise Smile

It's worth pointing out that I didn't work out the tab directly on the guitar - I'm not fluent enough. I wrote down what I could hear in notation, then figured where on the neck to find the sounds. I find it quicker in the end Wink

I so rarely use the full step lower that I've put it on a pedal. I use the half step (D# to D) constantly. I've never found a half stop mechanism that was firm enough for me to play in tune all the time. It's just the way I play - I hit the lever too hard sometimes.

I use that 2nd string to C# lower all of the time when playing the E neck. Couldn't do without it. Nor the Eb raise to E. The D note is less critical for me. It's funny how we arrive at our musical styles and develop our pedal set-ups to suit.

The stop I've fitted is adjustable for firmness, but I have to admit that I need to put a stronger spring in it, as I do tend to push too hard sometimes when I get excited - which is quite often, I'm glad to say! Very Happy

Ken, on this side of the pond, even cardboard ears can hear when someone's using knee levers! Mr. Green
