Listening to "Hawaiian Strings" tonight. When I was in Hawaii a few weeks ago we stayed several nights at the rim of Waipi'o Valley and got to see Hi'ilawe, and I started trying to play this song.

Now, the thing that baffles/amazes me is what he does 50 seconds in...it's obvious he's playing it without string strikes but just vibrating the bar and sustaining the string from that. I've tinkered with it and had nothing near the success that is obvious on the record. Anybody have ideas on how to do that? I wondered...maybe something on the bar like violin rosin to give it a little more catch on the string (not something you usually want, but might help it activate the string)....

I'd post a link to it but the versions that were online have been taken down by the Youtube Polizei...

He recorded that song at least 3 times, but seems to have used that technique only on the Hawaii Calls LP.
