You're gonna need your reading glasses to spot the two miniscule scuffs on the finish of this apparently barely played 50 year old pedal steel guitar. This is basically the guitar Sneaky Pete used on all those Flying Burrito Brothers albums. It utilizes a cable system for the pedals (four) and it's a breeze to change your copedents when you want to. The legs are in their Naugahyde or vinyl leg bag. The guitar is in very excellent, almost new condition visually and mechanically. It comes with a facsimile of the original manual and a brand new D2F cover for the guitar when it's assembled and out to keep it clean and protected. I understand there aren't a lot of these floating around, and how could it? It's heavy; the guitar, in its case, weighs fifty-five pounds. Asking $1650 + shipping.

| Not exactly Pete's steel,as most of us know. His was a long scale with fixed bridge. I have to say that price is pretty high. One long scale 400 just sold in my NY area for less than $500 in a music store. |

Right, his had a million mods too; but I guess it was a 400 he played, not a Sho-Bud or an Emmons or whatever. Don't worry about my asking price; if I don't get an offer I'd accept I get to keep it.

Nick, be very careful of leaving a guitar case open if you have cats. I know. And I did not even have any sand in the case.
I am sure that your case is fine. That is a spectacularly clean Fender.

Hahaha! The case is never sitting open !! Except for the photo ops !! Sorry to hear about you learning that lesson the hard way. Cats know when you're cheatin' on 'em.

Looking at this beautiful 400 it seems to be about the best I've seen in years.
I can't say if the price is too high or not.
The simple answer is that things are worth what someone is willing to pay. No more and no less.
I do think it is not very polite to make a comment like that.
If money was not an issue with me and I really wanted a 400 at this time, I'd be happy to make an offer on this one.
Looks like a fine instrument to own if that is what you like.

| Sorry if any one thinks it is not polite. I have a thing about old Fenders [or Sho-Bud Mavericks,though I love Fender 400s] and what I think are inflated prices. You are correct,though. People will pay what they think it is worth. |

I get it. My grandfather used to go on at length, regularly, about how much bread cost when he was a kid.
Hopefully no one will buy it and I'll keep it and perchance, find an hour a day to really work at it until I become obsessed and start spending two, then three hours a day at it.

This looks like the Fender 400 that I got in 1971 when I was 13 years old. Beginning at 9 I played an Oahu acoustic lap steel, then a Supra Electric lap steel, then at 13 my Dad bought me the Fender 400 and a Fender Twin Reverb. I waited about 4 to 6 months after it was ordered for me at Atkison Music. I played it for 3 years. I took lessons from Bill Atkison in south St. Louis, Missouri. The little chunks of wood missing on the body and the pedal bar are from a flower pot that fell off of my bookcase when I was in Jr. High. The original Fender logo was removed from the body and replaced with my name. When I sold it about 4 years ago it had been out of the case only occasionally in the previous 36 years. When I sold it to a man in I think Alabama I included to original ownwer's Manual. It was in "Like New" condition except the dings in the wood. It is worth the asking price for a near mint condition vintage intrument.
It sure looks like the one I had....of course I could be wrong.

I am not an expert on the vintage instrument market....
That said, I've seen quite a few of these in the past two years going for a lower price, but have only seen one that seemed to be in such a perfect condition.
IMHO that has to count for quite a bit to anyone who is in the market for a great vintage 400.
As I said in my first post, if he is asking too much it will not sell, if not there will be a very happy buyer somewhere.
Won't be me as I have to use my $$$$ to feed lawyers just now dealing with an ex-wife who just will not go away.
Can't spend on a steel now but it may make for a good C&W song some time.

I'm tempted to buy this 400 back...it had the best tone of any guitar I've had, including a '66 Emmons.

Sorry, Garry, Brian Whelan picked her up today after someone spotted the ad on Craigslist here in L.A. Apparently his boss Dwight Yoakam bought the only other decent one in the country (it was in Chicago) about six months ago so Brian couldn't let this one slip by. I just couldn't find the time to learn her and ... even if I had, I wouldn't be able to sing and play her at the same time. She's a beaut.
So close 'er up; sold outside of this forum...
