Bruce Clarke of Cumquat asked me to let people know about two new and thought-provoking articles on their website:

- Steel Guitar Tunings
- Steel Guitar and its Problematic Future
http://www.cumquatrecords.com.au

Note: Rick Aiello also posted a link in another thread but I wanted this to be easily findable in future searches.

I read them ... It wasn't very optimistic ...

He was an advocate of a "universally accepted" tuning , a proponent of reading music, Etc.

It's a shame that his son Dallas didn't "keep up" with the Hawaiian classics his dad was so passionate about ... Especially since Dallas did the "Lion's share" of the restorations under Bruce's guidance ...

Maybe he'll "come around" and get everything back up and available ...

I have many "talk tapes" he sent me back then ... Some very interesting albeit it 'controversial stuff' ... He even sent the last few talk tapes between him and Jerry Byrd before Jerry passed ... They were friends ... Sad stuff Crying or Very sad

I would also like very much to see a universally accepted standard tuning for steel guitar. But we don't yet even have a universally accepted number of strings. I think we're a long way from it.

Bruce was pessimistic about the steel gaining the respect in "legitimate" musical circles where reading is the norm and tunings are codified. With the exception of Emmons and Byrd, he was largely unimpressed with most of the post WWII steel guitarists. That said, he had a very critical ear for the nuances of the early greats and could talk about their attributes in great detail. His love and respect for pre-war steel is evidenced by the quality of his reissues. There are not that many folks who are world-class jazz guitarists, fine steel guitarists and experienced professional arranger/composers as Bruce was. He was a fascinating man to speak with.
