Hi everyone,

I did a really interesting gig last week in Amherst, MA with the above mentioned instrumentation. The gig was a bit of a tribute to earlier styles of jazz, but done in our own modernistic way.

Here's a track from it. The steel solo is the first one. Let me know what you think:

That is freakin' cool Myk! Do I detect the unique timbre of a Fouke Industrial lap steel?

Hey Steve, your ears do not deceive you! I was indeed using an 8 string Indy Rail along with a Gibson BR9 amp. I love that steel. I actually just got a second one made for me, this one a little more customized. It was based off the Dan Walsh signature model with a few important tweaks:
-it has two inputs: input 1 goes out to an amp, input 2 is an actual input
-three way pickup selector: 1: pickup, 2: blend of pickup and input “2″, 3: input “2″
-knobs: pickup volume, input 2 volume, master tone
-and mini Grover tuners (I think they look nicer)

and of course the big question, “what’s input “2″ for?. I plug in a contact mic that I can place on different parts of the steel to get all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds. Some reminiscent of old scratchy 45′s, others a dusty Dobro. The possibilities are endless and everyday I discover a new and intriguing way to alter my tone and sound.

here's a pic (sound files to follow a decent gig recording):

Very cool. Ever thought of using a wah pedal? It would fit right in.

Pretty cool Myk.

Those Foukes give an interesting sound for sure. I have the Dan Walsh model with a PAF humbucker and a coil split toggle.

+1 on Bob's idea of using a WAH.

Hey Bob,

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't messed around with pedals too much. I guess you could call me a "non-pedaler" Winking But that's a good idea. I should check one out and see what it does for my sound.

I would recommend it, Myk. I've started using one on some of my songs, and I really like the extra color it provides.

Way cool, Myk! I love the way you approach this tune -- perfectly in line with the feel of it, but pushing things along with syncopation and interesting note choices. Very vocal-like lines. Thanks for posting this.
