are somewhat fanatical about their instrument. Who's playing it; What tunings are they using? Where are they playing and with whom?

Are there any other musical instruments that get this kind of attention?

Is there an annual OBOE Convention? How about "Basoon?" or "Harp"? Any other established instrumental gatherings?

Spend a bit of time on the Gear Page forum, and you'll be absolutely amazed by the detailed level of obsession of which guitarists are capable. The Mandolin Café forum isn't quite as nuts, but there are still plenty of discussions about minutia.
