The Duesenberg multibender has intrigued me since it's beginning. My used one just arrived this Tuesday from a member here - Duane Keiper (many thanks). I am "NOT" a skilled woodworker as so many of the builders here are - all my builds start with metal (aluminum) as sheet or square tubing. My first 8 string - 100% metal, second and third - metal base, wood facing. This one - composite or laminate - idea stolen from "Sierra". I knew I needed to have the straightest string pull to get away from string breakage - stole the idea from a design of Tom Pettingill (love the shape) Conscience clear - I can continue! I built a roller nut to ease strain on the pull - lathe turned 10mm Delron rollers, cut the rest with hacksaw. I plan on double thick aluminum headstock. The second thickness will be stepped in 1/4" for appearance and be held together by bolting through the roller nut and the tuning machines. I think I need to open up some places on the aluminum sheet to help the wood/aluminum/wood lamination process. I bought some Titebond 111 ultimate wood glue. Glued a piece of wood to a sheet of aluminum - I can't (by hand) tear it apart. I am using a P-90 pup. That is where I am at - any suggestions from here are gratefully accepted. [img]

You should use the "search" function about duesenbergs. They have been discussed in detail many times before.

Thanks Alan - I am building this guitar for the bender but I am asking about the build. Does anyone have any ideas about the wood/aluminum/wood lamination? I realize the expansion rate of wood to aluminum is much different. I am planing on opening sections of the aluminum to allow me to laminate wood right through. Also any ideas on the type of wood to use?

Thanks Ray

Fun project Raymond! Smile

I worked on a Sierra 6 string a while back and they used mahogany on that particular one. As I recall, I remember not seeing any visible squeeze out or evidence of glue inside of the control / pickup area. Forumite Rick Aiello might be a better source on the joining details.
