Hi all, I had to do a Format on my xp pro computer hard drive. I then reinstalled xp pro with service pak 2 & 3, I downloaded all the updates from windows "DOWNLOADS" and then windows sent all the updates. The computer was working grate(for a day). The next day I started the computer and it got to the point to load the desktop and turned off (shut down). In about 25 seconds it started up again and did the same thing over and over. I went into SafeMode and it did the same thing. I can't get the desktop up. I tride to start from the Windows disk by changing the startup in the Bios to my D: DRIVE with the installaion disk and it will not start. Any sugestions?? Thanks, Art |

Is your computer a Hewlett Packard, with an AMD CPU? If so, you should have downloaded a patch from HP before installing SP 3. The patch is a Registry edit I think, that prevents the endless loop reboots you are experiencing.
If your PC is HP, with AMD, use a different puter to goto HP and locate the XP SP 3 patch and save it to a USB thumb drive. Install XP SP 2 until the desktop is stable and the copy has been activated and licensed. Then, plug in the thumb drive and run the AMD patch. Reboot, then install the SP 3 upgrade. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Hi Wiz, My computer is a bare bones system that I put together about a year after xp pro came out. I don't remember what the cpu is. I haven't installed any programes on the xp computer so i'm thinking of putting the Hard Drive in my external enclosure and format it again and install xp pro. I have SP 2 and SP 3 on a flash drive to install. I could have downloaded a bug on the day that it worked, do you think that could be a possibility? I do thank you for your suggestion and I will try that first. Art |

There's a permissions issue I encountered in 2007, while I upgraded an XP Pro computer to SP3. I remember having to open Regedit and change the permissions of certain Hkeys to the all all from the "admin" user account I was in, instead of "System." Then the service pack upgrade proceeded smoothly. It's in the Microsoft knowledge base. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Thanks for your reply Wiz. Would I have had the computer working great after installing SP3 if there is a Permission issue? The computer was turned off 2 times during the day that the service pack 2 & 3 was installed and booted up OK. Then the next day is when it would reload over and over. I would think if it was as you stated it would have also happen when it was booted up the first day a couple times (after all sp's was installed). Please let me what your thoughts are on the above questions I have. Thanks again, Art |

As I recall (?), when there were wrong permissions on HKLM, the upgrade simply failed with an error message citing Access Denied, or Insufficient Permissions. It did not go into a rebooting loop.
The endless loop can be caused by a bad hardware device driver, although that usually results in a BSOD.
What CPU and motherboard do you have? Have you Googled for similar problems upgrading to XP SP 3 with ___ cpu and --- motherboard? _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Art, if the hardware is compatible, even if marginally, you may want to abandon XP and install Win 7 since Microsoft support is ending next month.
By the way, Harry Hatterer, (from York) stopped to visit Monday evening. He was in Florida for a cruise out of Tampa. |

Hi Jack, It's been a long time since our last chat, good to hear from you. As to change over to Win 7, I have a computer with Win 7 and it is the best I think and there is no way one could convince me to go with Win 8. I have a reason for the need of XP Pro Computer and it can only have the OS on that computer with the SP 2 & 3. I will be using it for operating a CNC Router and it will be a dedicated computer. It will never go on line or be used for any other programs. On the other hand it must work with no glitches or it will cause a lot of problems with CNC operation. I mean CASH and BURN type of a thing. Good hearing from you. Thanks, Art |

Wiz, Jack, I just want to thank you all and I found two hard drives that I had for backups that I didn't know I had. They both worked and booted up Windows. I just had to do some updates on one and the other I will make into a clean XP HD for my CNC Router. I will format the drive that I had problems with and do a Clone of Windows XP PRO for a backup. Thanks again for the help, Art Manning |
