I just found this fact off the old steel forum, so there you have it folks, Mr tone monster himself likes a dark sounding pup! Of course that along with a pot pedal and you can't help but think, " classic pedal steel tone! to the bone!"

That's pretty cool, Quentin! I've been trying to work a 20K humbucker, so I eq it kind of bright, and the mix of dark and bright gets a pretty rich sound. Well, its pretty poor the way I play, but I imagine a good player could make it sound pretty rich.
Hard to imagine a better sound than what Hughey laid down, and he had a great sound his whole career.

Hi Daniel, I find with a higher wound pup you can eq the the warmth out of it but its hard to add 'beef' to a smaller wound pup. Papa Hughey had tone that would make you feel weightless, of course alot of that was in his hands too Smile

John Hughey also put a lot of heart into his playing.
