Anybody use these? I have the opinion that they cause damage to the tubes. from vibration and thermal expansion differences with the metal on glass.

Those actually work well and many manufacturers use them. Besides holding tubes in place when installed "upside down", they can also keep the tubes from vibrating and causing noise. Even facing up they help. All the older Marshalls used them in that way.
As for thermal expansion differences between the tube and the retainer, I don't believe it is ever a problem at all. It's just not a consideration. |

| I've had a Marshall JCM800, 100watt tube head since 1986, with those in it, and it's never been a problem. There's not a lot of tension on those springs. |

I use them on all my amps. The only tube damage occurred before I used them. An output tube fell out of the chassis, and wasn't noticed until I heard the sound of breaking glass upon closing the tailgate of my vehicle. That was ten to fifteen years ago. I've had no problems with tubes or tube retainers at all since installing them.

+1 on the long spring retainers... I've never had a problem with them. I've converted old Fenders to them as well... you'll never find the tube falling out, that's for sure. The worst thing about Fenders is those silly toothed retainers that don't really work well.

I've never heard of them til now..
Question--How do you get the tube in and out ?? Anyone have a pic with tubes in.
Geeze I need to get out more.. |

I switched to the spring retainers for 6L6 and 6550 based amplifiers. They do a better job of quieting the bottle from rattling in a high power combo amp.
The clip retainers are great too - when properly implemented, both can prove to be very useful

All you need to do to get the tubes out is lift the spring. |

| The spring retainers and bear claw holders both work very well. You can get insulators for those spring retainers on big bottle tubes to help with vibration. |
