Anonymous band with attitude:

Dig those amps! Anybody know what those were? might be a homemade lap steel.

Noel Boggs in the studio:

Boggs again with (prop?) triple-neck. I'm guessing this was a gag promo shot from Jo Stafford's hillbilly version of the song Temptation, re-case as Timtayshun.

Studio portrait of the lovely and talented Marian Hall. She was one of my favorite people to talk with when I wrote my book. Sweet, self-deprecating and totally charming.

Nice! That first band should be called "The Honky Tonk Good Ol' Boys". That joint they're playing in reminds me of some of the smoke filled, backwoods New England country bars I played in when I started out. $15 a man and free beer!

The amp is an Electromuse. Probably made by Valco. To the left and right, perhaps just extension cabs? I seem to recall seeing a Premier amp with cabs like that which latched together face to face for transport.

That triple-neck acoustic!

Yeah, before Jimmie Page ... before Ric Nielson .... Noel Boggs!

Also, here's a studio outtake of Timtayshun with the band above, would be my guess. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TiOPoIc8PE

And to understand what they were satirizing, here's Charlie Parker's version of Temptation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mzC5JFGcxY
and Artie Shaws: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GaViq6AA-8

In the picture with Jo Stafford and Noel Boggs, it's the Town Hall Party band - Herman the Hermit on banjo, his son, Cliffie Stone, on bass and Harold Helmsley on fiddle. I don't know the others.

Anyone know what the name of this band is?

Long scale Bigsby, that from the 11150 serial number you would not be able to tell if it is January 11, 1950 or November 1, 1950. But it is January 11.

Chris,
Don't you think that is "Bob Tucker and His Sky Riders" ?
The two signs seem to indicate that. I do not know anything about Bob Tucker, besides the bit of info about his Bigsby. Didn't you have a record of the band?

The Cliffie Stone photo is of some of the cast from the Hometown Jamboree. I do not think they were all members of his band.

Yes, Todd, you are right. Nothing gets past you.

That was one of the Bigsbys that Chance got from me. He restored it with parts he got from you, I believe. He sold it on the guitar's 60th birthday.

Here is a record

One does wonder at that. Low wattage vintage amps coupled with a modern efficient speaker can be great small club amps. I have a late '50s Gibson GA-8 loaded with a Weber C10N that's a little monster.

But back in the day, those dogs didn't bark very loud.

From the UCLA Library Digital Collection, the Los Angeles Times Aloha String Quartet performing for radio in 1927.

From the Field Trip South blog (part of the Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina), here's Roy Acuff and his Crazy Tennesseans with Clell Sumney on dobro.
