I played an 8 string Gold Tone yesterday - it was used at a local music shop. It was in very good condition and I almost bought it, but then chickened out.

One thing I noticed, though, is that the tone knob barely did anything with the tone, and mostly just cut the volume ridiculously. It was almost as though there were two volume pots. Is that typical of the guitars, or did somebody goof that one up?

I've played other under-arm guitars over the years that have had that issue before too. Why is that? It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to wire up a guitar so that the tone knob controls the tone...

It sounds to me as if the guitar was wired incorrectly. That should be a relatively easy fix.

Super easy. Typical passive tone circuit has two components - the pot and a capacitor. Could not be more simple.

To be clear, that wasn't the reason I passed on this guitar. I decided the money would serve me better elsewhere in my life.

But the guy at the store claimed it was "almost brand new," (and it did look it) and that it was a student that bought it, and then decided to switch to PSG shortly thereafter. I just don't see how such a wiring issue could have happened on a nearly brand new guitar. There's always more to the story, I guess...
