Found this online at a Guitar Center in New York state. Picked up today in south Austin. Seems to have very little wear and tear. No legs.
Who teaches C6 in the Austin area? I have the DeWitt Scott book and Your Cheatin' Heart and have been working on the DeWitt Scott book on a Recording King. I need, at a minimum, some mechanics instruction before I develop too many bad habits.

Get a webcam for your computer and do lessons on Skype.
A lot of really HIGH quality instruction available via that method.
I'm taking from John Ely via Skype and its great. |

Those really nice sounding steels.
There plenty of great players in that area who can get you going on C6--look up Herb Steiner or Anthony Locke for starters. Forget Skype--do a one-on-one lesson if you live in the Austin area. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

I do want to stay local with lessons. I think the Steel Guitar CoOp get together is this Sunday. I may go out there and ask around. My ideal would be someone who plays non-pedal mainly, and is a good teacher also. Good playing and teaching don't always go hand in hand. Maybe Cindy Cashdollar, or Eddie Rivers, who I assume lives around here.
I put a new set of C6 strings on it this morning and plugged it in. Holy Moley! It sounded like a chorus of angels in my living room. |

Leon, please come out this Sunday... we'd love to meet you, and there will be plenty of non-pedal going on. You should also be able to meet many of the best educators in the area.
As for legs, start watching for Fender piano legs on eBay... same thing, but cheaper since more common. We need an adapter for standard half-inch steel legs to 5/8! _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

I will try to make it. I used to play guitar in the band some out there before they went to the new format about a year ago or whenever it was, so we may recognize one another. |

Great guitar to learn on...beautiful. Whatever instruction you decide on, buy Doug Beaumier's 25 songs for lap steel book / cd set. Anyone learning C6 should have some of Dougs material. George Boards also has some pretty good C6 DVD's at a reasonable price. _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. I certainly have noticed the recommendations for Doug Beaumier's books before. I need to get through DeWitt Scott first. |

Leon, with your great knowledge of Western Swing and chord theory, you're going to drop right in to this stuff. Your helpfulness on the Tele forum wins you lots of good Karma points for getting help with learning steel. I think you'd like Rose Sinclair, too. Be on the lookout, she's playing in Austin a lot. _________________ "The Masher of Touch and Tone"

Thank you for the kind words,Jim. There's a lot to learn, even though I understand the music pretty well. NOw I'll have poor intonation on fiddle and on steel guitar. |

Stephen, I used this idea: http://www.mcmaster.com/#97088a220/=qnhy20 with appropriate threaded stud to adapt 1/2" legs to 3/8" thread on an old Gibson. You could do the same to go to 5/8" |
