I think that when you start you need to have a hero, someone you love listening and you would like to play like. I know I will ever close to be able to play as good as Jerry Byrd but it give me a direction.

The big thing for me is when I discovered is more western swing stuff he does with Chet Atkins. I like the band they had Jazz from the Hill and album like Hi-Fi Guitar.

I tuned to C6 and try to learn as much song, lick, chord I can from these tune. I feel that when I will be able to figure out and play all this stuff I will be able to play anything!

It will take lot of time and effort but I have a direction. Jerry Byrd have it all, tone, vibrato, picking, intonation, feeling, taste, everything, so why not try to play like him!

Jerry Byrd once told me that to be as good as he was that "you would have to practice 8 hours each day for the next 40 years."

That was one way of Jerry telling you how much he practiced.

It is practice, folks.

Are there any recordings still about with Jerry playing with Chet Atkins?

I am very much a fan of both of them but have never heard them playing together.

Another qoute from Jerry "The harder you work the luckier you get"
That said Jerry had magic fingers and you either have it or you do'nt

The COUNTRY ALL STARS on RCA would be a good place to start. Several Homer & Jethro albums and singles will find both BYRD & Atkins.

Then if you visit the JBFC you can hear random tunes with various vocalists on which they both played.

I had the pleasure of having lunch with him and Jerry Fessenden in 1984 or so at the St Loius SGC. What a gentelemen...and...the king of the bar slant in my book.
