When does it cease to be a lap steel and become a tone generator or effects work station? |
I actually think that's the way steel is heading, and it could grow into a powerful "entry device" for the whole ambient/looping soundscape genre. Greg Liesz, Bruce Kaphan, Daniel Lanois, post-rock band Red Sparrowes*... I also suspect we may get re-invaded by the Brits again, as the Indian/Asian communities over there are getting mixed up in the musical culture and it's getting wooly. Or at least, it's more likely than re-animating Ray Price's frozen head for the comeback of country crooning.

*("Post-rock" is a subgenre of rock music characterized by the influence and use of instruments commonly associated with rock, but using rhythms and "guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures" not traditionally found in rock.) |
