Anyone see Paul Franklin & Vince Gill on the View today? It was wonderful to see the steel & Paul showcased up front and personal. Way to go camera man or woman. Great stuff!

Man 'O man,,,,absolutly auwsome.
Vince never sang better and that guitar that Paul was playing has an incredable sound.
I don't knoe how many of you have tried to play with just a voice and rythem guitar. It's not easy to play and make it fit just right. But Paul accomplished it perfectly.
An incredable performance.

Is that Jenny McCarthy who swans in right over the ending of this exquisite tune? Yuck.
Paul's wonderful tone gets eclipsed by her breathless entrance and inane question.

They were just on IMUS this morning, also.
Vince couldn't have been better. And, Paul's tone
was fabulous !!! Playing thru a Fender (I think)
but couldn't tell what it was ! |

Regarding their appearance on the View, I thought Paul's tone was pretty generic and his high (G#) string sounded thin and tinny. Wonder why he didn't use the Little Walter. I know, tough crowd… |

My take: That Franklin PSG has a beautiful natural tone. Tone can be derived at in many different ways. Just as straight guitars have many different tone capabilities, ie: electric, acoustic, Eq., Effects, etc. Vince used his acoustic guitar appropriately for this particular song, Paul matched up with more of an acoustic tone as it was just the two of them performing. His playing tech as always was superlative, sustain was right there, the tone was more Hawaiian for me. Elegant, soft and just perfect for this song. I believe Paul set it up this way being the professional he is. Very enjoyable!! TX

if you're not being facetious Barry, then I'm guessing it's because they hopped a plane out of Nashville and were going for the minimalist approach and had a local back line supplier get him a Twin, same as when they appeared on Leno recently, just the two of them and backed up on that show by some of the members of Jay's band.
No tour coach or equipment truck for these quick TV gigs. When most of us bought our copies of Bakersfield the Cracker Barrel edition with four extra songs wasn't out and the main tour supporting the album has come and gone. So it seems that Vince and Paul are scrambling around to make appearances and give a shot in the arm to the Cracker Barrel edition. When they played here last fall Paul had a Little Walter head with a pair of cabinets. Less crap to deal with on an airplane, he's already got that D-10 Franklin to contend with.
As far as tone and TV broadcasts, I guess you have to take it all with a grain of salt. I was speaking with Jerry Douglas after a show a number of years ago and mentioned that on a recent at the time TV special with Alison Krauss & Union Station, his dobro tone didn't come off so great. He told me it all depends on the "feed" - what they're hearing in the TV studio during the show and what one gets on TV or in a video can be very different.
I liked it. Pretty rare to see two of the very best in the game, a guy with just an acoustic guitar and a vocal accompanied by a pedal steel player, singing a great tune by a songwriter who would be on the Mount Rushmore of songwriters were there such a thing. _________________ Mark |

Thanks for that link, Rene! Somehow I found that by closing my eyes and really listening to the music only, made me appreciate it even more. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

I think us steelers owe a big thanks to Vince (and Paul) for working to give the pedal steel that kind of national exposure. It takes a celebrity name like Vince Gill to get the air time, and there’s probably no one better than Paul Franklin to show the world the potential of the instrument.
There’s one statement I seldom hear that explains it all......
“The Pedal Steel Guitar is the ultimate musical instrument because no other instrument comes as close to duplicating the sounds of human vocal chords!â€
I can’t help but think if the world knew this, there would be a lot more interest the Pedal Steel. |

Dan,
Everything you wrote!!
Moreover, these two gentlemen put their money where their mouth is. They are swimming against the cross-current of Nashville producers with real C&W music, albeit Retro!
As the producers, they put together a real tight set of C&W musicians and risked $$$$ in what they believe C&W is. Now let's see if they are acknowledged at the CMA's, eh?
BTW: My wife & I stopped at Cracker Barrel here in Orlando, Fl. for a delicious breakfast, Lo and Behold, every other song in the background music was a cut from the Bakersfield album!!! Wow, how cool is that!!
Priceless!!
Good on Cracker Barrel, Vince and Paul!! TX
