both of these favorite steel players playing emmons p/p through their formative years have distinct sounds.
who knows what their actual setups were?
john used evans amps? jd used a doubling effect?
anyone have a good knowledge of their basics?
of course i know the difference in their hands, etc.

This info is from what I remember reading "Steel Guitarist Magazine" - I could have it wrong.

Before the Session 400 - Hughey used a Fender Deluxe Reverb or a Twin in the studio. Jay Dee used a Standell with the ZB name on it. For chorus Jay Dee used a Yamaha SPX 90 and then a Yamaha E1005 Analog Delay set to chorus. John Hughey would have probably used the Roland CE-1 Chorus Ensemble for chorus on his first solo LP: "On Stage." Another great chorus was the blue double space MXR Flanger/Doubler. Wish I had that one back.

Don't bet the farm on this, but I heard that JD uses a pair of Evens amps, with the speakers out of phase.

First question - do you mean Jaydee Maness? Or JD Call (Pure Prarie League)? If you mean Jaydee, he discusses his rig at about 39 minutes into his interview here:

http://www.latalkradio.com/Players/Flo.shtml?date=December+2,+2013&file=120213

Live, he uses 2 Evans amps w/ BW speakers. More details in the interview.

Edit - either I'm an idiot, or you changed the Subject of your post Chris.... Well, both are possible, I guess, but I swear earlier it did not say "Maness" in it!

John Hughey told me that back in the '70s, his favorite sounding amp was an Evans Hybrid 500 with the tube preamp and transistor power amp and JBL D130. In his final years with us, John owned and used any one of his 3 Revelation Tube Preamps with various Stewart power amps. He said that he liked the Revelation pre so much because it was a similar approach to that old Hybrid with the tube pre section and the transistor power, a "sweeter" sound than the all transistor approach. He seemed to always prefer the JBL D130 or K130, the alnico 15" classic steel speaker.

Mr. Hughey always allowed me to use his amps when playing for Crystal Gayle (early career), whenever we opened for Conway Twitty. This very old picture is of me tuning my Emmons PP with his Evans amps (one w/black panel & one with wood-grain panel) in the background.

It's been a very long time ago, maybe 35+ yrs, but I think the Evans amp on the left w/woodgrain control panel might have been one of the "hybrid" amps referred to previously in Brad's reply. Mr. Hughey always told me to set the controls any way that I wanted, however, after his sound check I never touched anything other than "plugging in". So, I don't specifically remember very much about the amps. I just used them as he had them set.....and they were set, very good. I always referred to him as "Mr. Hughey" out of respect and admiration.

I opened for John once in the '80's or '90's and he was loving a pair of Peavey Vegas 400's. Not unusual to see John experimenting with his equipment I think,

FYI, a moderator can change the title for clarity and it won't show as edited.

During the same era that I mentioned (circa 1970's), Mr. Hughey occasionally would use an early Peavey Session 400 (first generation) in place of one of those Evans pictured. As best that I can remember (I was in my 20's in the photo, 60 now Whoa! ), those 2 Evans as well as the single Peavey Session 400 were the only amps he had on that tour. As a side note: I stopped playing steel for 20+ years following that tour, per my parents request that I complete my college education and pursue a different career.
