Am I going to screw up the 6th string raise if I go from a wound string to a plain?

No, but you'll have to back off on the rod a bunch, and you'll feel a "hitch" halfway down when the rack picks up the 6th string. But you're probably used to hitches and notches.

Hey Lane -

I'm a city boy so I'm not so much with the hitches and notches. But this is my first R&B, I'm not mechanically inclined, & don't want to screw up a good thing.

Thanks,
FF.

OK. Here's the more detailed version.
A .022W will need more travel than a .022 or .020P.
Since you already HAVE the wound, you know you'll have adequate travel.
When you switch to Plain, the pedal travel will now be more than you need, so you back off the 6th string rod.
The 3rd string still needs a long throw, so as you press it, the 3rd string will start moving before the 6th. So halfway down, you'll feel the pedal "pick up" 6.

just put a plain string on it (probably a .020) and tune it up. adjust things as necessary.

Why go to a plain? The main reason people switched to a plain string was to get the 6th string lower to F# without excessive travel. If you don't have that lever, I'd say stick with the wound string. It's less tempermental and sounds better too, in my opinion.
