I don't know what to say other than I didn't find it something I care to repeat . Strange.

I saw that clip a couple of years ago. It's kind of shocking. I don't mind her low, husky voice... she's 67 now, but the flat singing grates on my nerves.

She compares herself to Bob Dylan and Neil Young... Shocked

Quote:
"Either you like my voice or you don't," Marianne Faithfull says in a deep, husky breath. "If people come to my music expecting my pretty voice, or anything pretty, they're going to be disappointed and they're going to hate it. It's much better to come to my work and say, 'This is going to be like Neil Young or Bob Dylan,' and then you'll have a good time."

I like the weathered sound of her voice. She never was a great vocalist, but I like the way she sings. The instruments sounded woefully out of tune to me and that bugged me more than her singing.

She has played on and off with Bill Frisell since the 80s. Here is a recent recording of the two of them playing the same song. Much better IMO.

Even with a great like Frisell backing her. It is pretty sad. It is a beautiful song that she destroys but I am not a great fan of recycling burnt out addicts. I guess one of the great things about music is we all like something different.

As Nils said I wouldn't go back to listen the first video. But I like her original sixties version a lot and "This Little Bird". I also like her 70's version of Waylon's "Dreaming My Dreams" and this one:

Come on, Nils, that's harsh. Everyone has their own baggage. Kudos to anyone who has the strength to recover from addiction and find redemption. This song does that for her IMO.

Besides, I'm a sucker for shipwrecked voices.

It was the oboe player that I wanted to take out and shoot. Marianne was not aided by the out of tune instruments.

I was crushing on her big time in 1969. Now I'm glad that ship sailed w/o me.

Her whole shtick was the angelic face and little girl voice. Both are gone and what's left isn't pretty........ either physically or vocally

Some pages are just best left unturned.

I agree that the instruments, and especially that oboe, are distractingly out-of-tune, and that can't be helping. The Frisell video is much better. I'm fine with a weathered voice if that speaks to real mileage and experience.

But my take on this kind of thing is that there is so much great musical talent out there that can't ever get any exposure whatsoever - they don't have the looks, the kitsch, 'beautiful people' cache, or whatever. So I've always been more than a bit cynical about the pop world's and, in general, the public's total fetish with 'pretty thing' but mediocre-to-poor singers and musicians.

So I'm happy for her that she seems to be out of the weeds, but I think I'll pass on the next one, thanks. Smile

This is totally about nostalgia. Obviously she's not about to win new fans. But, yes, that oboe (English horn?) player needs firing.

Francoise Hardy, Michelle Phillips and she looked and sounded so beautiful to me when I was a twelve year old.
No, they didn't have great voices, but they are still remembered fondly by me.

Very nice arrangement also. Jim is the beginning of the melody of "As Tears Go By" played with single strings on frets five and seven?

that was pretty sad really.. btw, Her band needs to be beaten with a shoe.

I kind of like weathered voices, but in this case I will just say, I will remember that song the way she did it when I was a teenager... bob
