Any thoughts on what he's using to get that slap back thing (you can really hear it before the band comes in). I assume its some kind of delay, but correct me if I'm wrong.

just pretty much what you'd get using any delay set to a short slap with a single repeat or so. common setting for steel guitar.

Mr. Mooney had a MXR Digital Delay during the Waylon
years. MXR Blue Box (80's) but I think it quit working & parts was hard to find.
I think the delay you are hearning is a Dan Echo DE-1
at least that was what he used before his passing.
RIP Ralph....Gone but not forgotten. Thanks for the great music you left behind.
