I am going to shorten the rods/legs on my PP Emmons so I am buying a tap and die set.
What is the thread size on the rods ? I might not need it because it looks like there is plenty of thread already. But I want it just in case I do need it.
What do you guys do for shortening the legs ? _________________ Bob |

The threads are 10-32 for 3/16ths rods, and 8-32 for the skinnier LeGRande rods which are 5/32.
But, the threads are not cut with a die, they are rolled. You will get a sloppier fit with cut threads.
Which rods do you have? I have five different versions of Emmons pedal rods in my parts pile, and a lot are short. How many, how long and which version?
I also have shorter legs in my parts pile. Let me know the length and collet style you have. _________________ Chris Lucker

Bob,
If you don't need oem/original legs
I would suggest calling Sammy aging son up in Mass.
He will make you a set of lightweight aluminum legs that will surprise you... For about the cost of modifying your originals.
I have a set and the lightened up the load immensely.
Thanks for the pickup bro!

Only if the one who does the threading doesn't know what he's doing!
Chris, where I work, we probably buy hundreds of thousands of screws each year, and our experience is that the "rolled is better (more accurate) than cut" argument simply isn't true. (The "go/no-go" guages tell the real story.) Screw manufacturers like rolled threads because they offer a substantial cost saving, and they also reduce the amount of chips and spent cutting fluids, which now require controlled disposal. |

Clearly, I don't know how to cut threads with a die or on a lathe. _________________ Chris Lucker

Pop out the threaded part and use a good tubing cutter for the legs. The rears might abjust in an inch but not always.

Bob, I would trade legs with someone rather than going to the hassle of shortening the legs. I would also talk with Chris Lucker. He is very generous about helping out guys with problems such as you have when given a chance.
