Hey guys, where can I get some replacement grill cloth that matches an early '70s twin. Looks like the pic. Blue sparkle vertical threads.

Thanks,

J. W.

Thanks, Jack and Ken. Mojotone carries it, unfortunately, it's out of stock.

Hi Michael, I looked at it again, and there is a difference between the product you mentioned, S-G304 and the 6300002 at Mojotone.

I may get enough to re-do my Twin and other cabs I am getting. I don't see much of a black thread in the original cloth. I would guess that the original cloth can only be matched closely, not exactly.

Thanks again,

J. W.

I saw this on Amazon when I was working on a project earlier. Could this work for you? This is a link to Amazon with the silver and turquoise style cloth.

I have bought it from the tubesandmore.com - they are here in Tempe and give great service - only a couple days shipping to CA from Phoenix.

They have lots and lots of stuff. Still send out a catalog as well.

Joe, thanks for being persistent, but I'm seeing a difference in these. Am I wrong ? The silver threads are more pronounced in the larger image. Does it look different when you see it in your hands ? Problem is once you buy it, your stuck with it.

Thanks,

J. W.

I think it is just the photo computer image. But you may be right - they will send you a sample if you ask them.

In case you're concerned, that really doesn't matter as far as collectibility and value are concerned. Once the grille is replaced, it's no longer "original" (even if you use identical fabric) and any savvy collector can easily tell if it's been replaced.

Here is another place to try. They have "aged" Fender gill cloth.

Donny... I am not concerned too much about that. I have no interest is selling my Twin...ever. Nor my Super, or D-28, or much else. I had the Twin serviced years back, and had a master vol put in, as well as going to Black Face changes. I may actually put the head into it's own cab. I am not getting any younger. That's why I need enough grill cloth to do a few things. When one starts looking close at grill cloth, one can see the weaving. What color goes over another color. Too bad Fender doesn't offer it. Or do they ?

Jack.. thanks for the link. It's not there either. The 6300002, from Mojotone looks like it is as close as it gets. ( note how the silver threads are pronounced, and the black threads are woven under the silver, and the blue is not too big ) Seems more accurate to what my Twin looks like. Not exactly, but close.

Thanks guys for all your input. You guys are awesome !

One thing to consider, what is on there is "aged" and unless you can find "aged" exact replacement grill cloth you will never find an exact duplicate.

A early 70's model amp (looks like the AB768 chassis model I had) is 40 years old. Over the years patterns can change slightly so the exact same thing may no longer be available. Unless you can find some NOS, "close" may be the best you can do.

Also make sure you're viewing those 'samples' from THE SAME SIDE in both cases Rolling Eyes ...remember that woven cloth is exactly that...the threads are woven from side to side, and appear slightly different when viewed from each side..

..there is actually a 'front' and a 'back' to these things.... Wink

...don't bother to ask me why I know this...

BTW, I have had great service from eBay Seller "busmc"...worth checking them out!

John I had no idea this subject would take on a life of it's own.

K I S S method for me - I just drove to Tempe picked up the cloth - went and had some BBQ - came home and finished the amp.

The BBQ was the important part for me.

John,
Unless I am wrong, that is my original 1968 Twin reverb in the picture with the Showman behind it. Early 70's Twins have a different grill (slightly). I replaced the grill on my 1970 Twin with an aged cloth as you have pictured below. I will look in the basement and see where I purchased the cloth.
regards,
Lefty

Grille cloth made of plastic, if it's not damaged, can be cleaned...sometimes with excellent results! After removing the chassis and speaker, lay the amp cabinet down (face up) on a piece of cardboard or plastic tarp, and spray the grille cloth liberally with Windex. Then, scrub using a 4" paint brush, spray with plain water and scrub again, and then blot dry with a turkish towel. To speed up complete drying, let a fan blow on the front of the amp for a half-hour.

I've done this on some pretty dingy/dirty grilles on bar-room amps, and the results are well worth the effort. Smile

Hi Lefty, yea... I borrowed a pic from the Forum post that had a bunch of Fenders. Sorry, just seemed easier to do that drag my Twin out in the sun and take a fresh pic. I can see that the cloth on yours is very similar to mine. One can see different variations on each of the Fenders you have. Nice herd !

Peter... as into this as I am getting, I did not think about what cloth looks like from the back. Thanks !

Joe... a lot of input on a small subject. I hope it helps others as well as myself. I like to do things right, and I like to take the time to do that. Original grill cloth probably will never be found. But I swear that the 6300002 is about as close as it gets. ( wonder what it looks like from the back ) LOL

Thanks guys !

John,
No problem. I know that the cloth I bought to match a 68 was from Antique radio supply or Mojotone, but cannot determine which of the two.
Good luck.

I have purchased from Antique Electronics and Mojotone. The Fender style cloth is the same from both. They probably both get it from the same source. It also depends on which side they took the photo of.

Not all Silver Face Fenders have a blue thread in the cloth. Some have a red thread, that was probably left over from the '60's. My '71 Pro Reverb and '77 Deluxe Reverb, both have red thread in the cloth. The Pro's grill got messed up, so I changed it to the blue thread cloth. That's when I noticed the difference in the color. And all of the Mojotone grill cloth I've seen, doesn't match Fender at all. The vertical spacing is too wide, and the silver thread is too thick, and fuzzy.
