Is there a "real" advantage to a square neck vs a round neck with a new nut for lap steel playing? Inquiring minds want to know….

Square necks are massive and can withstand the tensions of open tunings and high actions.

Round necks, not so much.

Square necks are also wider to accommodate the wider spacing that is typical in lap style playing.

The mass of a squareneck also adds sustain to the tone. A round neck with a high nut will work (that's the kind of dobro I first learned to play on)but you'll never apporoach the tone that you get from a squareneck.

That said, maybe you'll like the sound that you get. But it won't give you the sound of a squareneck dobro.
