Recently picked up a Vegas 400. Went ahead and ordered parts to do the Peavey Tone Mod, and replace all the filter caps. I was then reading a post last night that said that mod kit was developed because they changed the speaker from a 1502-4 to a 1501-4. This mod would make the amp sound like it did originally but with a 1501-4.

Sooooooo........the question is, since mine has the 1502-4 speaker, do I just want to change the electrolytics, leaving the values the same, or go ahead and install the new cap values that are speced in the mod kit? I will go ahead and change the op amps since I now have them on order. I would rather not redo anything, so looking for opinions before I start.

Thanks,

2134 chips only and stay with the 1502-4 in the Vegas. I screwed up a Nashville 400 with the "Super Mod" and a Vegas with the Peavey mod. You will have a hundred answers to this . LOL Stock , except for the 2134 chips, sound best to me. Very Happy

If it's never been done, you need to replace the filter caps, and any other electrolytics that have aged. These amps are getting old and this is basic maintenance for aged amps.

Yep, have all electrolytics on order, just wondering if I should leave the values stock, but they will all be replaced.

The tonal change by varying value of the caps will be to one's own taste, but an improvement in sound can be made by using polystyrene/polypropylene caps instead of the stock ones---even if the values are the same. The film caps are definitely more expensive than the stock ones (which is probably why PV doesn't use 'em).

I would retain the stock values, or as close as possible, for all but the DC filter caps. The large power supply filters can be a higher cap value by about 25% ( I like 6800uf), and the voltage value can be as high as 100 volts.

The poly caps are very good. You will notice the sound will have less harshness. That's because poly caps pass audio signals more accurately than electrolytics...which treat the positive and negative halfs of the signal differently causing the harshness I referred to.
