Ok, I was getting a bit tired of playing the same stuff with the D tuning on my lap steel (low to high D A D F# A D) so I started to work on harmonic minor scales. Now, this scale contains two major triads, on scale degree 5 and b6. So D is the 5 in G minor and the b6 in F# minor.
Everybody with me so far?
So here are the scales, with the open strings notes in bold:
G harmonic minor: G A Bb C D Eb F# G
As you see, all the open strings are good. If you think of D as the root note, then you get a very cool D phrygian dominant scale, which will probably sound "arab" or "middle eastern" to most ears.
Now for our second scale utilizing all the open strings in open D, F# harmonic minor:
F# G# A B C# D E## (F) F#

Nice.
A correction however: a Eb note isn't supposed to be in an F# harmonic minor scale.
I've fiddled around some with special tunings to get some new sounds.
One of the easiest (and it's great fun) that I came up with: a C6, but with the 6th flat. Sounding middle eastern in no time! |
