I love my little GS-10. However, after years of playing a D-10, I find the placement of its volume and tone controls annoyingly obtrusive. Since the controls on mine were bypassed before I purchased the instrument, I plan to remove them entirely and plug the holes. Or perhaps fabricate an entirely new pickguard (or control panel or whatever you want to call it).

One other alternative has crossed my mind, and I'm quite certain that others have considered, and possibly experimented with this option: Installation of a boo-wah and/or stutter switch button(s) in place of the volume and tone pots. The stock panel would lend itself nicely to the substitution of a pair of lower profile buttons.

I have discussed this possibility with a longtime friend and fellow GS-10 player who is also an audio engineer. He seems to think without any doubt that I have gone off the deep end.

Anxious to hear other opinions on this subject. And don't be shy GS-10 and Black Rock players -- do the poll!

i'd take the control panel out intact, save it and make a new metal or plastic cover for the little area.

Fabricating a new plate to cover only the area vacated by the volume and tone controls would leave three unsightly holes where the original plate was screwed to the cabinet.

Undoubtedly a more permanent and elegant solution, and one that may be precisely what I finally end up doing, would be to fabricate and install a new plate which has the same footprint as the original. (Perhaps tortoiseshell would look cool on my sunburst GS.)

By merely pulling off the knobs, removing the mounting nuts for the pots, and undoing a couple solder joints, the entire assembly (pots, wiring, and capacitor) will drop right out of the cabinet intact.

Still intrigued with the idea of a boo-wah and a stutter switch in their place. What's your take on that, chris?

My GS-10 has the stock tone and volume controls, their location doesn't present any problem for me. Once in while I do check the knobs and confirm that they are full on. I think if you are in the habit of letting the heel of the picking hand touch the guitar, this might be a problem. I don't do that; I keep my wrist straight and only let the the outside edge of my hand contact the strings. If the knobs bother you, I don't see any reason not to remove the whole works and cover the area with some plastic of metal.
