Topic: Anyone know a player named Danny Muhammad? |

Recently I borrowed a CD by Aaron Russell called "That Fifty Seven Chevy" . Three steelers are listed, and one carries the name Danny Muhammad. You must admid, that it's a rather unsual name for a guy in a country band. Anyone know this picker...? The CD was recorded in Nashville AND Mount Vernon, Illinois, so maybe a local player...

PS: The two other steelers are Hal Rugg and Sonny Garrish.

I don't know if playing steel for Ray Price is worth mentioning.
I'd tend to imagine that Mr. Muhammad regards his name as pretty much what it is. |

| Danny plays here in Nashville and I have seen him several times. He is a monster picker on both the steel and telecaster. I have seen him do gigs where he picks steel and telecaster on the same song and rips on both rides... |

Perhaps an interesting counterpoint would be to ask: "What's with Denmark and Muslims?"
Remember those cartoons that set off such a volatile (and dispicable, I should add) reaction?
The question you raise in your post is not "politically incorrect", it's just kinda (IMHO) immature and unsophisticated.

The question asked was:

That question was unsophisticated and immature? I don't agree.
Mohammad is an unusual last name for a country picker--there's nothing unsophisticated or immature about pointing this out. So we've learned he's a heck of a guy and a great picker. Simple. Done. End of story.

Thanks everyone. As a Ray Price fan I should have known. But I didn't.
To Mike Phillips: I called this topic "politically incorrect" beause of what you are pointing at. Yes - some of my fellow danes were a little out of place there, but just to let you know I have several Muslim friends, and many of them has the name Muhammad (first name, middle name or last name), so whether you like it or not, it IS an unusual name in country music. If a player or singer with a danish sounding name comes along, I pay attention as well. Blaine Larsen is one - Troy Olsen is another. And there's even a steelplayer name Olsen - Tiny that is.

It's important when instruments and styles cross cultures. Think what the steel would be if it stayed in Hawaii.

| Danny is a great guy and quite a jazz guitarist too. One time our house band was fronting Ray Price and Danny was there to play steel for Ray. Between our sets Danny picked up a lead guitar and tore it up on a couple jazz numbers! |

| i met danny once twelve years ago at gabe's in nashville...very good player..incessant noodler...he played constantly through a couple 15 minute breaks...dave robbins was there too egging him on...that was a good week for me , also meeting big murph, lynn owsley and jimmy day... none of them were even wearing a turban... |

| Danny is from near Milwaukee but spent time in Waterloo, Iowa. That's where I met him. He played for a guy down there a few years before I did. Also Danny did a stint with a fellow by the name of Ray Coble. Last time I saw him, he was playing for Ray Price at the Crystal Grand in the Wisconsin Dells. |

Danny left Ray a few years back. Some guy named Cass or something has that job now. 
Danny has been with Trick Pony. I heard today from a Nashville road player that we opened for that Danny is no longer with Trick Pony.
I'll second all the good things already said about him and, having spent a few hours with him between sets when opening for Ray, add that he's a good teacher. I would have liked to spent more time with him.

| I know Danny from several years ago when he was playing around Omaha NE. He was a monster picker on steel, guitar, and 5 string banjo. Last saw him in 2002 in Newberry SC with Ray Price. He is also an all around nice guy. |
