Yes, Tiny Olson, a super nice guy and great steel player! I met Tiny when I was playing steel in a warm-up band for a Gene Watson concert in the early 80's at Cat Ballou's(wonder if it's still there?)in Houston. We talked about everything concerning steel guitar. I remember he was playing a dark blue mica D-10 Zum, and he remarked that he liked it. But, he quickly added that he also had an Emmons that he loved dearly. I wonder if the Emmons he's playing in the video, is the one he was referring to? |

Butch, I had the same experience. My band opened for Gene at Cat Ballou's in Humble. It would have been about 1983 or 84. Tiny was playing a white Emmons through a brand new Nashville 400. The only effect he had was an Ibanez AD9. He was kind enough to show me some licks and things after the show. I'd only been playing about two years and he was very complimentary of my feeble efforts on the steel; I'm sure he was just being nice, but it sure boosted my confidence immensely. His playing was superb.

Back in the 80's, Tiney worked with Gene along with Tony & Larry Booth, I forgot the name of the guitar player (I think he still is around the Houston area)
and I forgot the name of the piano player, he got sick and to quit, but they brought in Joe Black, "I think".
Anyway, the black Emmons Tiny used: he finally sold it and it went around the horn and then Robin Mims got, kept is for a while, then sold it Bobby Bowman.
Bobby changed the color from black to red and he still plays the guitar to this day; great playing guitar as well as Bobby.
So this is story about Tiny's black Emmons now it's red! I still keep in touch with Tiny; he used to come over my house and I tried to learn something, but he is way aboue my playing. Somewhere in my archives, I have tapes practicing with the little dough-boy. I need to dig them out.
At this day and time, Tiny is now up to his mid-life state and got a bit skinny.
I hope one day soon, he will show up at the Dallas Convention, being Tony Booth usually comes, maybe Tiny will get on the stage with the
old Gene Watson band; would that be cool or what??........ |

I do believe that guitar is the one that Bobby lovingly calls "Booger Red". He has spoken of it many times. |

Hi folks. Hope you all are well and thanks for your kind words. I sure wish Bobby would sell that Booger Red (formerly black) Emmons back to me !!
Over the years I've owned 5 push-pulls and 2 LeGrandes. All have been great sounding horns but that particular guitar just had that something extra. The blue ZumSteel Butch mentioned was a 1983 guitar and I played it on "Got No Reason Now For Going Home". But that Emmons Bobby Bowman now plays was my all time favorite. I used it on most of Gene's recordings that I was fortunate enough to play on. I did play my '75 rosewood Emmons though on "Memories to Burn".
Tommy, you're a dang good horse!! Always great to hear from you buddy. You are right, compared to my road days I am almost skinny now. Back then I was 6'4" and tipped in at 'boat 390 lbs. Now as I'm a click away from 60, I'm down to 6'3" and 260 lbs. Guess it may be the lack of chicken fried steaks from the Iron Skillet restaurants at the Petro Truck Stops that I devoured while on the road in the 70s and 80s. Long hrs. sitting, driving the buses from gig to gig didn't help either.
Thanks again my friends and I wish all of you happy and blessed holidays.
Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson |
