Topic: How Many Steelers Played With Ray? |

Who were the actual Cherokee Cowboys steel men... got measured for the jacket (not just one gig). I'm asking because there were a lot. Ray was loved and respected, the bands were always great, and most steelers count their tenure as a high point of their careers. So why was there so much turnover in the steel chair?

I did one gig. It was not a high point for me, and definitely not for Ray. He spent the whole show trying to get away from a bad monitor mix, but there was no escape. |

About the time Ray was playing with Blackie Crawford's Western Cherokees, the steel player was Jimmy Biggar.

I'd be curious to know the steel player at a Ray Price
concert in 1960 at a theater in Nigara Falls, NY. It was on a Sunday afternoon. We went backstage after the show and the steel player was drunk and passing around the bottle to anyone who would take a drink. I refused, but I have always wondered who it was, and if the rest of the band was high as well.

I was honored to sub for Jim Loessburg for one show in Wendover, Utah about 3 or 4 years ago. So I, too, was a Cherokee Cowboy for one day!

I remember when Julian played with Price on a tour of SoCal in 1970. My band was the opener on one gig and Julian and I roared (read: partied) all weekend.
Also, Lynn Frazier played with Price in the late 60's, as did Cal Freeman before his hippie days.

That's my point. A lot of good players took their turns. Why weren't there longer tenures? Were the tours sporadic, the money weak, bad management, too demanding...anybody who had the gig care to elaborate? We know the music was good, and we think Ray liked the steel.

Norm with Merle, Hughey with Twitty, and arguably Mooney with Waylon seem like the extreme outliers. I'm sure there are several other really long-time steel/singer alliances but I can't think of any at the moment. (Of course, the moment I hit "submit" I'll think of a few more.)
Of course yet another factor that comes to mind is that Ray had a waaaaaay longer career than most, so he's also had more time to go through more players...
Most bands I can think of have had revolving players for every combination of the reasons you mention, Joe, plus more - perhaps most frequently being some kinda boredom, weirdness between band members or with management, and - most often - simply that the proverbial grass seemed greener somewhere else at the moment.
My guess would be that among Ray's players we'd find a bit of all of these in there somewhere. It would indeed be interesting to know, though. |
