| In 45 years of playing, I just experienced a problem with my third string that sounds impossible. I have heard strings that go dead and have no sparkle or life left in them, but, I have NEVER had an experience like I just had with my 3rd string. When I picked it, it would just make a "thud" sound, no ring at all. My first thought was that it had slipped off the roller, but no. Then I thought got to be at the changer end, wrong again. So then I assumed the worst, the pickup is practically dead on the 3rd string and I am going to have to buy a new pickup. I replaced the string and the new one worked perfectly. What......was that old string possessed or something? Not that it matters, but the brand of string was SIT (I can buy them locally for $6.75 per set, so I am cheap) and had only been on the guitar about two weeks. I still don't understand how a string can just make a thud and not ring to some degree. Anybody else ever heard of this. Maybe it is a bug going around that 3rd strings are catching. WIERD, WEIRD, WEIRD. |

Had you tried loosening it, taking it off the finger, and wiping down both finger and string?
That's usually a sign of foreign soft stuff under a string. Once had a small piece of lint do that.

I'm with Lane. If you wipe the strings down with a soft cloth or tissue etc.,a small piece will lodge under the string and cause this sound.

Lane, what you say could have been the culprit. I wipe my strings down with one of those soft nap yellow polishing cloths that Walmart sells. Could have been a piece of fuzz under the string, but I didn't see any, but then again, I was not looking for any.
I am not afraid to touch my guitar now. I was worried that it was demon possessed. But your explanation is certainly plausable.
